Cinematic Universes And Sony’s Spider-Verse. What lies ahead?

Sony had a field day in 2018 with both Venom and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse being major box-office blockbusters. Venom might not have been critics choice but fans sure seemed to enjoy the anti-hero outing.

The movie went to on earn over $850 million on international box office, compare that to $622 million of Ant-Man and The Wasp and $880 million of Spider-Man Homecoming.

To say that Venom defied all expectations will be an understatement.

Miles Morales In Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse

After two failed attempts Sony might be finally getting the cinematic universe thing right. Spider-Man 2 released way back in 2004 is still one of the best superhero movies out there and the best Spider-Man movie that there is.

The success that Marvel had with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something that all major studios have been trying to emulate. DC had the opportunity and was most likely to succeed as they too have a colossal fan following and some of the best comic book stories and IPs.

Batman and Superman, without doubt, were a huge global brand way before Dark Knight or Man Of Steel ever hit theatres but same wasn’t the case for Iron-Man and Captain America. Maybe this was one of the reasons as to why Marvel succeeded. They had a clean slate with no preconceived notions and the freedom to tell the stories that they wanted. Even though DC currently has the best superhero movie out there, The Dark Knight, it hasn’t yet fully recovered from the debacle of Batman V Superman and Justice League.

However, Aquaman has made a billion dollars at the box office which is a positive sign but going into 2019 Shazam and the Joker movie’s performance will determine the fate of DCEU in the near future.

DC Superhero Ensemble

Sony plan to share Spider-Man with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started paying its dividends. There had been reports earlier that we might see Tom Holland in the Venom movie but that didn’t turn out to be the case. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not a possibility in future Spider-Verse movies.

How will Tom Holland appearing in Sony’s Cinematic Universe even work? Since I don’t think MCU and Spider-Verse are the part of the same Universe since that might create some gaping holes. It would be great to see, however, Venom and Carnage appear in the MCU. Sony has more than 5 movies planned for the Spider-Verse. And it is hoping that they will achieve what Marvel not on the same scale but even a pie of that will be a big success.

Here are the Spider-Verse movies that Sony’s has confirmed is ar some stage development

  1. Black Cat
  2. Silver Sable
  3. Morbius The Living Vampire
  4. Kraven The Hunter
  5. Silk
  6. Jackpot
  7. Nightwatch

Only an avid comic book reader would find the above IPs familiar. Apart from these, Venom 2 is confirmed to be development, how can’t it be after $880 million. Even though the likes of James Cameroon have been warning about the Superhero fatigue. I think we are yet to hit the peak. A summer movie collecting $2 Billion might at first seem the peak that there is, but the fact that a year in which we had near 10 superhero movies and all were record-breaking success makes me feel that we are still a few years away when people start complaining that all that is they see in theatres is a superhero movie.

Decoding Marvel’s Formula

2019 is another major year for the Cinematic Universes as Marvel releases three of its movies Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame and Spider-Man Far From Home. And DC has Shazam and Joker movie to planned for April and October respectively. How these movies perform will decide the trend for the upcoming few years. As other Studios join the fray and James Cameron trying to establish his own cinematic universe with the Avatar franchise which is being constantly delayed.
