Shazam: What If Things Go Wrong for DC?

DC had a very rough start to its Cinematic Universe. Man of Steel and Batman V Superman might have done okay with at the box-office but fans were not pleased with the movies and the result of which was that Justice League tanked at the box-office.

DC’s upcoming movie Shazam

That said DC had a huge success with Wonder Woman, the first female led superhero movie that very few expected to be a breakout success. James Wann’s Aquaman made $1 Billion Dollar at the international Box-Office. So, is this the reversal of trend that DC had been hoping for. Are they out of the woods and does success await them in their future endeavors.

2019 has Shazam and Joker planned out for DC. By the trailers of the movie, it is obvious that Warner Bros want us to know that is going to be a fun movie filled with humour and references just like a Marvel movie. So, please come and watch our movie, Shazam.

Shazam, who earlier went by the name of Captain Marvel in the DC comics is a story of a kid named Billy Baston who gains the powers of a wizard named Shazam. The wizard was guarding a prison where the seven deadly sins: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and pride were imprisoned. He was looking for someone to hand over the mantle when he meets Billy and empowers him with his magic.

The trailer gives us a sneak peek at the movie’s villain Dr. Sivana, who in comics goes looking out for a way to save his family who were fatally ill and beyond science’s saving. It is in a way similar to what Doctor Strange’s arc with a difference that it is Sivana’s family that needs saving rather than him.

Dr. Sivana had a troubled childhood and grew up to be a psychotic loner. In this expedition to find the magical solution to his problems he comes across Black Adam during which he gains his powers and is struck my magic in one of his eyes that enables him to see the magic spells as we wee water and stones. A cool power to have.

Dr Sivana Meets Black Adam

So, the movie will play out as a origin story where Billy Baston meets with the wizard Shazam who gives him his powers. Billy along with his friend learn and explore Billy’s Shazam powers and have a lot fun doing that until Dr. Sivana comes by to say more than just hello.

It is still unclear if we would get to see the Black Adam in the movie or will it be just Sivana vs Shazam. I hope that Black Adam does make an appearance. As we are going to get his solo movie where Rock Dwayne Johnson plays Black Adam. If not an appearance than at least some sort of setup is expected. Like we had of Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them’.

Shazam Trailer Breakdown

How should we expect the box-office to play out? Well, the movie is made on a production budget of just $90 million. So it doesn’t need to put up record-breaking numbers in order to be profitable. Although it won’t out gross Captain Marvel or Aquaman, it will make a strong case for a sequel, given its low budget.

We should expect $100 million at US box office and another $200 million at the international box office. It might sound a conservative estimate. Well, it is. If it does better than more power to DC and it will enable the studio to put more movies something that we all want.

Aquaman’s Success Champions For Reconsideration OF DC’s Cinematic Universe

DC had struggled to emulate Marvel’s formula for a cinematic universe that churns out blockbusters one after the other. Although DC had a head start in the superhero movie genre with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy, they never build up on that like Marvel did.

Jason Mamoa as Aquaman

Man of Steel by Zack Snyder didn’t go well the fans and with Batman V Superman DC tanked their chances. People behind the scene at the Warner Bros studio knew they had to act fast and swift if they are to save the franchise. Luckily enough for them, Patty Jenkins’s Wonder Woman proved to be a breakout hit with more than $400 million at US box office. Things were looking better but then Justice League happened that tore apart the DCEU.

Since DC had committed to a slate of movies way before Superman V Batman hit theatres, some movies were in a far advanced stage to be cancelled once the executives realised that they need to mix things up. Lucky for us, we got the Aquaman. Although the movie had an average script the visuals effects and star power pulled the movie to over $1 Billion dollars at the global box office.

They have been reports of Henry Cavil leaving the DC and it is certain at this point that Ben Affleck isn’t the part of Matt Reeve’s Batman movie. And we have no clue as to when are we going to get the Flashpoint Paradox, the movie that was supposed to hit the reset button on the DCEU and would have explained the re-casting of the actors. The Joker movie scheduled to release in October 2019 has Joaquin Phoenix as Joker, whereas it was Jared Leto who earlier played the character.

DC’s Upcoming Joker Movie

After the debacle of Justice League, DC had opted to do individual movies and keeping the Cinematic Universe on a back burner. The upcoming Joker and Batman movie are a part of that. But with the success of Aquaman, I hope DC reconsiders their stand on the shared universes. Wonder Woman is returning in 2020 and it is certain that we will get a sequel to Aquaman which will be announced soon.

The only problem is they don’t seem to have two of their leading characters in the mix. Superman and Batman. Will we get to see Justice League soon enough? Well, I don’t see that happening at least for five years. DC tried going the hasty path and they burned themselves bad. They must first establish their individual characters with great movies in before they bring them all together. That’s what Marvel did with the Avengers. Now it feels so obvious that all DC had or has to do is make great character movies, good enough for people to care about them and then make their paths cross. Even Sony seems to be doing good work with their Spider-Man cinematic universe.

Elseworlds followed the cross-over path in the TV-Verse. And that is likely the case that will be for the Cinematic Universe, although I would love to see these characters be a part of the same universe rather than being separate Universes that rarely crosses over.

DC’s Arrow-verse

Will DC reconsider their Cinematic Universe and give it another try or will they pave their own paths? We will have to wait a year or two to find that out. If the Shazam and Joker movie do well that DC would stick with these independent movies. But that said, Justice League franchise is too big to be ignored sooner or later they will make another Justice League movie if their movies continue to do well and the superhero fatigue doesn’t turn out to be a thing.

Christopher Nolan has said on record that he is not going to direct another superhero movie any time soon. Getting him to do one of Justice League movies would have been something but it’s just wishful thinking. There are a lot of talented directors who can pull of another superhero ensemble movie. And now that James Gunn is said to be directing the next Suicide Squad movie, maybe DC might bring him in for the Justice League too.

I am not surprised that DC has decided to move forward with another Suicide Squad movie but not a sequel to Man of Steel. Well, let’s forget Batman V Superman for a moment here. So, has DC decided that they need to wait long enough before they make another Superman movie. Will they do the origin story again. I hope not.

Cinematic Universes And Sony’s Spider-Verse. What lies ahead?

Sony had a field day in 2018 with both Venom and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse being major box-office blockbusters. Venom might not have been critics choice but fans sure seemed to enjoy the anti-hero outing.

The movie went to on earn over $850 million on international box office, compare that to $622 million of Ant-Man and The Wasp and $880 million of Spider-Man Homecoming.

To say that Venom defied all expectations will be an understatement.

Miles Morales In Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse

After two failed attempts Sony might be finally getting the cinematic universe thing right. Spider-Man 2 released way back in 2004 is still one of the best superhero movies out there and the best Spider-Man movie that there is.

The success that Marvel had with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something that all major studios have been trying to emulate. DC had the opportunity and was most likely to succeed as they too have a colossal fan following and some of the best comic book stories and IPs.

Batman and Superman, without doubt, were a huge global brand way before Dark Knight or Man Of Steel ever hit theatres but same wasn’t the case for Iron-Man and Captain America. Maybe this was one of the reasons as to why Marvel succeeded. They had a clean slate with no preconceived notions and the freedom to tell the stories that they wanted. Even though DC currently has the best superhero movie out there, The Dark Knight, it hasn’t yet fully recovered from the debacle of Batman V Superman and Justice League.

However, Aquaman has made a billion dollars at the box office which is a positive sign but going into 2019 Shazam and the Joker movie’s performance will determine the fate of DCEU in the near future.

DC Superhero Ensemble

Sony plan to share Spider-Man with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started paying its dividends. There had been reports earlier that we might see Tom Holland in the Venom movie but that didn’t turn out to be the case. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not a possibility in future Spider-Verse movies.

How will Tom Holland appearing in Sony’s Cinematic Universe even work? Since I don’t think MCU and Spider-Verse are the part of the same Universe since that might create some gaping holes. It would be great to see, however, Venom and Carnage appear in the MCU. Sony has more than 5 movies planned for the Spider-Verse. And it is hoping that they will achieve what Marvel not on the same scale but even a pie of that will be a big success.

Here are the Spider-Verse movies that Sony’s has confirmed is ar some stage development

  1. Black Cat
  2. Silver Sable
  3. Morbius The Living Vampire
  4. Kraven The Hunter
  5. Silk
  6. Jackpot
  7. Nightwatch

Only an avid comic book reader would find the above IPs familiar. Apart from these, Venom 2 is confirmed to be development, how can’t it be after $880 million. Even though the likes of James Cameroon have been warning about the Superhero fatigue. I think we are yet to hit the peak. A summer movie collecting $2 Billion might at first seem the peak that there is, but the fact that a year in which we had near 10 superhero movies and all were record-breaking success makes me feel that we are still a few years away when people start complaining that all that is they see in theatres is a superhero movie.

Decoding Marvel’s Formula

2019 is another major year for the Cinematic Universes as Marvel releases three of its movies Captain Marvel, Avengers Endgame and Spider-Man Far From Home. And DC has Shazam and Joker movie to planned for April and October respectively. How these movies perform will decide the trend for the upcoming few years. As other Studios join the fray and James Cameron trying to establish his own cinematic universe with the Avatar franchise which is being constantly delayed.

Spider-Man Far From Home Villains Explained

Marvel released the Spider-Man Far From Home trailer, that gave us the first look at Mysterio and the Elementals.

Spider-Man and MJ in Spider-Man Far From Home

Jake Gyllenhaal is playing the super-villain, Mysterio. However, he won’t the antagonist in the movie at least not until the third act. He will be helping Spider-Man take down the Elementals, who are basically immortal beings that can control an element of nature. You can read more about them here.

Fans have been theorizing that the Elementals are either controlled by Mysterio, or are a part of his long con. And we know that Mysterio had a history of duping and deceiving Spider-Man in the comics. Let’s not forget that once time he convinced the Web-Slinger that he was going insane and he has to take off his mask, revealing his identity, in order to cure himself.

Mysterio and Spider-Manhttps://www.reckvinci.com/single-post/Spiderman-Far-From-Home-The-Aftermath-of-Avengers-4

Mysterio was a stuntman and special effects artist in Hollywood until he realized he had bigger ambitions and after failing as a actor, he decided to give the world of crime a chance. Since he believed that his experience with special effects will serve him will there.

In this initial days, Quentin Beck dressed as Spider-Man and executed his crime. Spider-Man was blamed for his wrongdoing. It was a great plan until Spider-Man had enough and he confronted Mysterio and duped him into confession. Thus clearing his name once and or all.

Mysterio in Far From Home

Mysterio might not have any superhuman powers but he makes up for it with technology and his expertise in creating illusions. His suit is designed to achieve him that. The infamous fishbowl helmet that is part of his dress is to save him from his own toxic gases. His capes some times do contain offensive weapons too like electrocuting those who touch it.

Mysterio was also the founding member of Original Sinister Six and Marvel is building towards that in the MCU. If Mysterio is not the main antagonist in the upcoming movie that he for sure would be setup as that for the sequel.

Vulture, whom we saw last in the jail in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man Homecoming too might turn in future sequels as a member of Sinister Six. We hope that Jake does wonders with his role as Mysterio, as he had tried to be part of superhero movies for over a decade, earlier as Spiderman and then as Nolan’s Batman.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio

Even if Marvel and Sony might have spoiled Avengers Endgame with the release of Spider-man trailer but it was inevitable anyways. We couldn’t have expected the marketing for the the movie to kick in May since it is slated for July 2019 release.

Sony has its own plans for the Spider-verse and 2018 was a lucky year for them as both Venom and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse were major box-office hits.
